Activity Description

Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) is a rare, progressive retinal disease characterized by gradual loss of central vision that disproportionately affects reading and near-vision tasks, often despite relatively preserved best corrected visual acuity early in the disease course. Frequently misdiagnosed as age-related macular degeneration, MacTel is a distinct condition that does not typically cause peripheral vision loss or complete blindness and is increasingly understood to have a neurodegenerative basis related to Müller-cell dysfunction rather than a primary vascular etiology. Its heterogeneous and often subtle early presentation contributes to under-recognition and delayed diagnosis, with advanced disease marked by retinal pigment epithelium hyperplasia and subretinal neovascularization that drive most of the loss of vision. Until recently, there were no approved therapies, and management relied on limited and inconsistent off-label interventions. In March 2025, the FDA approved revakinagene taroretcel-lwey for MacTel, representing a major advancement in care. This Ace the Case CE activity will highlight the early recognition and timely detection of MacTel and explore the assessment and treatment of this condition based on patient preferences and the latest clinical evidence.

The intended audience for this activity is retina specialists and ophthalmologists involved in the management of patients with MacTel.

To participate in this activity, you must read the objectives, answer the polling and pretest questions, view the content, and complete the posttest and evaluation. Provide only one (1) correct answer for each question. A satisfactory score is defined as answering 2 of the 3 posttest questions correctly. If a satisfactory score on the posttest is achieved, Vindico Medical Education will issue an AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ certificate.
